HOME!

What an outstanding week! We're safe and sound at home now, after a big traffic jam on I-71 just north of louisville. robbie and i decided to skip the traffic via a shortcut the wrong way on an exit ramp, until a cop (who was at least ten years younger than us) who saw the whole thing decided to give us a stern talking-to and tell us to get back in the traffic jam. at least we didn't get a ticket....

for the next post, i'll throw in some bonus pics from the week in new orleans.

Stuck in traffic

Less than 90mi from home, and we're at a standstill on 71. Sucks.

First stop: birmingham

135mi before the first fill up. Not bad. The carb isn't leaking, and the pipe isn't busted, so that's good.

Feeling good in the neighborhood

Craig and I just sat down for breakfast at the local waffle house
preparing for a big day of riding by eating some healthy food when I
saw this and had to snap a pic. At first I just noticed the braid, but
following the braid led me to the cuffs... Which led to the 9mm which
led to the badge on the belt. Welcome to Mississippi.

Sat night

Stopped in meridian, MS. for the night after 220mi or so. We found a hotel for $40 (camping is just too much effort right now) with the idea that we'll make the investment in a couple of beds tonight, then have the stamina to make it 619 mi home tomorrow.

As soon as we pulled up to the astro inn, my left carburator started leaking gas. After about an hr, we figured out that the float in the bottom of the bowl was stuck, so we were able to fix it relatively easily. Then robbie and I celebrated with chips, salsa and a beer at a local mexican joint (can you technically call it a joint if it's in the mall?).

Looking forward to a good night's rest. More action in the morning...

A fine place to be

We met Crispin at the Blue Crescent Brew Pub. It was a great place to have a local beer and great conversation.

Bourbon St is kind of an awkward place

We made it!

One other thing

Forgot to add this in the last post: the view of the city from our room. Off to dinner with someone named crispin!

Made it!

Just checked into the marriott. Tired, jubilant, ready for a strong week in the big easy. Pete and kid A are enjoying a well-deserved rest in valet parking.

Trickling oil

Kid A seems to be seeping oil slowly so robbie topped it off right along the gulf coast. Not a big deal, just staying safe...

Food is so good.

First real meal of the day, not counting boiled peanuts. We gave up on trying local cuisine and went for the closest possible place off the exit that served food things.

Road to mississippi

Lots of straight lines, plenty of photo ops. Lookit robbie on his sweet bike, also known as kid a.

Self portrait

This is what you do when you're driving in a straight line through
Alabama for 70 miles....

Now

Is anybody actually reading this?

Just checking... If so, feel free to throw a comment in here or there. Also, here's a bag of boiled peanuts after 3 minutes alone with robbie.

Tailpipe fix, take 3

First silicon tape, then aluminum tape, now metal sheetingand hose clamps. If only I'd listened to robbie the first time...

Friday's campsite

So the cherokee beach campground apparently doesn't have tent sites. The Sleep Inn is the next best thing. I realize the photo of robbie looks kind of like he's in a hospital bed, but I assure you he's in perfect health...

Day two

In a nutshell... Broken tailpipe, busted electronics, auto parts stop, lunch with friendly locals.

A real lunch stop- the "silver spoon"

Need I say more?

View from Robbies tent this morning.

> After a night of crazy rain and a chorus of retired men snoring I
> woke early to find both our bikes (kid-A and Pete) still standing.
> What a glorious sight to see our bikes among hundreds of other bikes

BMW MOA rally

Bikes as far as the eye can see! Also, robbie kept sitting on this bench but nobody wanted to talk to him about his Lord.

Robbie and Craig made it to second base last night

It's not what you think... We found a camping spot right in the infield of a ball diamond at the fairgrounds.
